Why Did YOU Choose Restaurant Management As A Career Anyway? By: Bruce Meglio

If you're like most of us, you probably ask yourself this question many times. Is running a restaurant something we always wanted to do since we were kids? My guess is "no". Oh, I'm sure there are a few out there who say, "I have always wanted to be a restaurant manager ever since I can remember." The vast majority of us kinda "fell" into this job. It's one of those careers that you end up with when you "don't know what you want to be when you grow up." I mean, think about it! We work when everyone else if off, we're off when everyone else is working. We work 50 to 60 hours a week (or more). What other profession requires 10 - 12 hour days and sometimes 6 day weeks??? If our shift is breakfast, we're "up and at 'em" before the rest of the known world gets up. If it's dinner, we go to bed after everyone else is already in a dream state. And then there are the phone calls at home, the "no show's", the "call off's", the "quit with no notice", the customer complaints and working weekends. I am absolutely sure you can add so much more to this list. Okay, that being said, my years working in restaurants have been extremely rewarding, exciting and I wouldn't trade them for anything! I have had the privilege to work with, develop, inspire (and be inspired by) incredible employees and managers and, hopefully, made a difference in their lives. I have made thousands and thousands of customers happy by serving the highest quality food I could possibly serve with fast and friendly service in clean restaurants. I've met people along the way, customers, employees, managers and superiors that I'll never forget. I've made a very decent living for myself and my family. How about those family and friends gatherings, because you work in food service, you are asked to man the barbeque, cut the cake, etc? Looking back? Good stuff. Very good stuff. There's also the benefit of somewhat flexible working schedules (not tied to 8 to 5), advancement opportunities and so much more. Yes, Restaurant Management is a very noble profession. As with any job, there is the good and not so good and, more importantly, it truly is what you make it. Whatever the reason is, however you got here, trust me, you have chosen an outstanding career that will give you exactly what you put in to it. The work is hard but the rewards are great.
